P. Abigail Sporeling
('Rydeen' × veitchii 'High Finger' "AUS Sporeling")
New to the U.S.! Where thunder meets grace— Abigail blends Rydeen’s bold energy with High Finger’s refined structure, creating a statement piece for any serious collector.
A rare Platycerium treasure for staghorn fern collectors. The Abigail sporeling is a newcomer platycerium hybrid prized for its lush green antler fronds and compact, sculptural form. Grown from spore and acclimated into a loose orchid bark mix, these babies are already showing vibrant new growth under our care.
This young fern will develop broad shield fronds that cradle its base, topped by gracefully arching fertile fronds. Treat it like other epiphytic Platyceriums: give it bright, indirect light and plenty of humidity to thrive
🌱 Spore-grown – vigorous genetics & healthy start
🌲 Mount-friendly – perfect for attaching to wood or slab
☀️ Bright indirect light keeps it producing lush green fronds
✨ Graceful form – expect hearty antler fronds with clean lobes
A sporeling is a juvenile fern grown from spores, typically in the early stages of development. Platycerium sporelings are young staghorn ferns that have not yet reached maturity and may not fully display the characteristics of their mature fronds.
• Characteristics: Platycerium ferns are known for their two types of fronds:
• Shield fronds: These are broad, flat, and sterile, anchoring the plant and collecting organic matter.
• Fertile fronds: These are antler-like and bear spores for reproduction.
• Sporelings are delicate and require specific care to develop into mature plants.
• Care Requirements:
• Light: Prefer bright, indirect light or half shade. Some species, like Platycerium alcicorne, can tolerate full sun once acclimated.
• Watering: Need regular watering, ideally with rainwater or distilled water if tap water is too alkaline, as they are sensitive to water quality. They can tolerate some drought but thrive with consistent moisture during the growing season.
• Mounting: Often grown mounted on boards or in hanging baskets, as they are epiphytic (grow on other plants or structures without soil). Many sellers offer mounting services for sporelings.
• Environment: Thrive in warm, humid conditions, mimicking their tropical origins (e.g., Madagascar, Australia, or Southeast Asia).
